Porcelain laminate is one of the most preferred aesthetic dentistry applications. Porcelain laminate largely contains feldspar, which is a natural glass ceramic. Additional components used are quartz and kaolin. The basic structure of feldspar consists of silica dioxide (60-65%) and aluminum oxide (20-25%) and can be used in different modifications for its purpose.

Feldspar enables its thin and translucent laminate material to imitate the natural tooth structure. With its strong structure, porcelain laminates are highly resistant to discoloration, staining, scratches and fractures. Thanks to these features, they last in the mouth for a long time.

Advantages of Porcelain Laminate

Porcelain laminates owe their advantages to the components they contain. To list their advantages:

  • They are durable for a long time under ideal hygiene conditions
  • They have a natural appearance similar to the tooth structure
  • Their surfaces are very resistant to stain formation
  • They have high physical strength
  • The natural integrity of the tooth enamel is not compromised as there is no need for abrasion on the teeth
  • As they are very thin in structure (leaf thick), they do not create any thickness on the tooth and are directly applied to the enamel. It can be glued
  • Its extremely thin structure is very fragile on its own. However, since they are applied to the teeth with strong adhesives, they become resistant to biting forces.
  • Since there is no loss of dental tissues, it is easy to eliminate dissatisfaction in the future.

Disadvantages of Porcelain Laminate

In addition to the positive features listed above, porcelain laminates also have some disadvantages;

  • It is very difficult to remove the laminate that is adhered to the tooth. Special tools such as a Dental Laser or a tour motor are required.
  • Since they are extremely thin, fractures may occur on the thin edges, especially in the presence of bruxism ( teeth clenching or grinding). For this reason, this treatment method may not be recommended for patients with complaints of teeth clenching and grinding.
  • If food selection is not taken into consideration, excessively crunchy - hard meals or foreign objects in the food may damage the laminate structure.

In Which Situations / Why Should Porcelain Laminate Be Preferred?

Porcelain laminates can perfectly mimic the natural appearance of teeth, thanks to the components contained in their structure. Its surface is as hard and durable as tooth enamel. Thanks to their translucent structure, they transmit light well and provide a natural appearance. They allow aesthetic corrections to be made without causing almost any loss in tooth structures. For this reason, it is a good alternative to veneer teeth that covers the entire teeth.
